I've seen numbers as low as 80% and as high as "over 90%" of kidnappings as being by a parent. It's not easy to get good numbers since we have to estimate what fraction of "missing" children are actually "abducted" children. For children reported missing: Over 1/4 of are abducted by a family member, about 8% are kidnapped by a non-family member. You'll note that this leaves nearly 2/3 of missing children as not being classified as abducted. > I’m sure there’s usually more to the story, but half of them sound like custody disputes.
