AI will guzzle energy, and that's good for the climate

The only reason end users don't see the cost of electricity in the cloud is because its not their power bill. Sure data centers do get flak for the power consumption, but everyone forget how energy efficient a data center is required to be, and that that data center is what keeps all those apps and programs working. AI is the new target to blame. It was datacenters in the past, then it became the cryptominers, now its AI. Is any of this efficient? No, but free energy is a meme and the biggest cost with power that I see in most states is the infrastructure aka the cost of power delivery to premises, not the actual generation. Do I yearn for more efficient devices, you bet. More efficient compute means we can do more with the same budget.
