On my research, I've done it with a plant (to a limited extent, obviously). The reason why I chose a plant is because they're less-complicated versions of animals, at least as far as my simulation was concerned. We are "far" but it's that kind of thing that an unexpected breakthrough gets you 80% of the way. My bet would be, doable by 2040.
