AL has a substantial manufacturing sector. Over the past 30 years it has built a lot of car and aviation factories. Over the past 60 years it's built a substantial defense/space industry (aside from the aviation factories) with the Army rocket base at Huntsville that became NASA Marshall. The Space Force was supposed to relocate its HQ there; the Biden administration canceled the move, but it will probably happen eventually.
