Ask HN: Why am I not able to comment on my own post?
so I posted this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41647608 and I wanted to leave a comment providing more context, but immediately after I posted the 'discuss' button disappeared. What gives?
- KMnO4 2y agoThat post is marked as dead. Users with high enough reputation can flag new posts, which essentially marks them as spam and limits their access.
- punkpeye 2y agoIt happened within seconds of me posting it. so does it mean that someone flagged my entire domain as dead?
- punkpeye 2y agoThis would explain why none of my latest posts got any engagement, which sucks. I've put a lot effort into them.
- LinuxBender 2y agoBest thing to do for a definitive answer would be to email Daniel (dang) hn@ycombinator.com It might be a day or two to get a response. There are too many possibilities for anyone here to guess.
- punkpeye 2y agoSent a brief, polite message asking for Daniel's input. Thank you
- pvg 2y agoIt's very likely because it's the only thing you're posting, the system treats that kind of posting as potentially spammy. You can post your own stuff of course but the purpose of the site is curiosity and interestingness rather than promotion so if your behaviour looks promo-ish, your submissions will typically do less well.
- punkpeye 2y agoMy angle has been to use Glama's blog as a sort of diary of interesting findings while working on the product, rather than promoting any parts of the product. I understand the logic behind why a restriction such as this one would be imposed, but I still find it odd limitation as it appears to be based purely on the domain name being shared rather than the content being shared.
- pvg 2y agoIt's not really so much about the 'promotion' as such but the sameyness and repetition. There's lots of mod comments explaining this but a very stripped down explanation is that posting the same/related stuff over and over is repetitive and boring which is the opposite of the aim of HN. https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&sort=byDate&type=comment&query=curiosity%20repetition%20by:dang https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&so...
- PaulHoule 2y agoPeople who post links to their own blog repeatedly frequently have that problem. If you posted links from a range of different sources you'd have no problem posting links to your blog but the system thinks you're a spammer if you only post links to your own blog. Go into your profile and turn on the "showdead" option and you'll get some insight into the moderation process. A lot of posts go to [dead] immediately.
- punkpeye 2y agoLearned something new about HN today. Never noticed those settings. Thanks!
- everlier 2y agoI had the same situation, maybe gods are angry at us due to some reason.
- cranberryturkey 2y agoshadow banned maybe?
- fuzzfactor 2y agoIt does seem like a lot of worthwhile submissions are DOA without any positive or negative commentary. In a different way than it used to be a few years ago, and far more often.
- PaulHoule 2y agoIf you've got the power (enough karma) to flag you also have the power to vouch. If you log into your profile and turn on the showdead flag you can rescue these worthwhile submissions.
- punkpeye 2y agoWhat's enough karma? just curious. I've got almost 600 karma, and my last post before getting shadow banned did really good. I didn't expect everything I post to go to the top, but I was surprised to see that everything else just entirely flopped. Like that piece about LLMs used to optimize sign-ups... I get that it is not going to appeal to everyone, but I personally found it to be a geeky, interesting subject.
- PaulHoule 2y agoAccording to https://github.com/minimaxir/hacker-news-undocumented/blob/master/README.md#flaggingvouching https://github.com/minimaxir/hacker-news-undocumented/blob/m... 31 karma is enough to vouch but you cannot vouch your own submissions. I think that's a fine submission but I'd also say that having somebody else take an interest in posts to your blog and submit them is also "social proof" that it is interesting more than you submit yourself. Also if you submit links from a variety of sources I think you are less likely to run into this problem.
