I sometimes feel that way about pixel art in modern games, but maybe that's a bit like getting angry at people playing checkers for using a chessboard wrong. For some people it's about being creative within the very narrow bounds of a specific system, for others it's about using a very specific style that originated within those bounds. In order to use that style you still need a good way to simulate thouse systems.
