We had remote teams before the cloud. We had VPNs for accessing files and services on our own servers. Often, those servers were a pile of boxes sitting in the corner of the office, but sometimes off in a data center somewhere. We had instant messaging, too. Remember that "the cloud" is just someone else's servers, and yes we did have servers before the cloud.
The cloud is easier, and better in many ways. (And worse in a smaller set of ways.) But be careful saying that the cloud was what drove remote work, because that really isn't it - wide access to broadband speeds from home is what enabled it more than any specific set of servers you choose to access.
