You are right - but AI as we know it is wildly unfit for almost any mission profile. It makes 100x more sense from an accountability, logistics, oversight, idempotency and safety perspective to just scuttle any weaponized drones you cannot control. Relying on automated procedure is how Iran got a free RQ-170 a few years back - it's not smart to fully rely on a process that can be fooled.
AI in combat is scary on the face of it, but when you consider the diminished lethality compared to our "classical" smart weapons, it doesn't seem to have much fit in the first place.
