Jailing someone is also something perpetrators think must be done for the greater good of all. I honestly don't understand the comparison at all. Plenty of things are done for a greater good. Some of them work better than others. Similarly, bloodletting and modern medicine have the same purpose (making the patient feel better), but one of them is better than another.
