regardless of theatrics or not, meta products does have lots of dark patterns to fetch the same data apple and google and amazon and samsung have access by shipping OS level ad networks on their devices. You simply cannot use whatsapp and other meta products without willing or unwillingly, give them full access to upload your contact list to their servers and fetch list of also-running apps.
- fragmede 2y agoWhatsapp doesn't have access to my contact data (which is a pita) because I didn't give that to them, unless you're claiming that there's a bug in the permissions model that Facebook is exploiting to upload it anyway. Which I'm sure the but bounty program at Apple would be delighted to pay you for, if you have any actual evidence of this happening.
- 1oooqooq 2y agocongrats! now you have a broken app! go ahead, try to add any new contact. you will get a allow to read contact loop. denying contact access haven't worked since 2018 on android you can work around by adding all contacts via wa.me/+1... urls on the browser and then allowing to open with app (or constructing the activity, but that's even harder for regular users) either way, that's for 0.00000000001% of users. as i said, they have dark patterns which work.
