Examples I'm sure we can all relate to: desktop environments, systemd, pulseaudio, programming languages, github/lab vs mailing lists. Lots of religious debates come up to separate out from legitimate technical concerns. Organizational issues are a whole other ballgame. I can see how my original comment was not specific enough about this.
