- bell-cot 2y ago> The labor force is projected to become younger, more educated and more female, but those groups aren’t necessarily a match for the industries expected to need more labor — including health care, construction, and trades ... > ... researchers are skeptical that AI and automation can fill the kind of practical, hands-on roles that the economy will need. I have a real vague memory of an old Hard SF story, where 99.999% of humanity has digitized their minds, and now live only in an awesome cyber-utopia, reaching every-greater heights of intellectual awesomeness. And/or hedonistic excess. The other 0.001% are a hereditary servile class, who toil endlessly in meatspace to keep the massive cyber-infrastructure, and its not-quite-sentient maintenance robots, working. (The sentient robots have also moved into the cyber-utopia.) Then, one day, the ill-treated servants flip the giant OFF switch. Asimov or Clark, maybe?
