I must be missing something. Is there anyone who actually thinks Turing wouldn't be worth remembering if he hadn't been mistreated for being gay?

- keithpeter 14y agoYes. Turing, Church, Shannon, Kolmogorov, a whole section of thought, was started by these people. We forget that sometimes.
- andrewcooke 14y agowhere by "yes", you mean "no". yes?
- keithpeter 14y agoAha, I did have problems parsing the comment. I mean Turing's sexuality was part of him, and the second world war saw him taking part in very important secret work, but neither of those things are the most important about his contribution in the long run.
- lmm 14y agoChurch (arguably) contributed as much or more to computer science, but is not idolised in the same way as Turing.
- othermaciej 14y agoI'd say that Turing's accomplishments as a whole were somewhat more notable, though of course Church is also a giant of the field.
