Seems like some broad definitions of language and communication. Like if grass plants are responding to the chemicals of other grass blades being cut, that only seems to be communication if the point of releasing that chemical is as a warning. If I stay away from someone who’s coughing, it’s not because they are coughing to communicate to me a viral threat, it’s because I understand the coughing to be symptomatic of a viral threat.
