Generally speaking that may be true. The rise in inequality has been trending upward even before online dating was a thing, which very well may be because we're found greater access to people in general. There is certainly some correlation with more/cheaper travel options, more people living in large communities, etc.
But the article, and associated study, is about specific growth (not all growth) that has been attributed to online dating specifically.
