Elon Musk's X Deemed Too Small for EU Crackdown on Big Tech's Power

- ggm 2y agoThey've dodged a lawsuit (the EU that is), but I think they failed their core mission. I tend to view the crackdown as consumer friendly, even if others see it as paternalistic and rights-denying.
- mytailorisrich 2y agoThis is all purely political. The EU and Commissioners are on a power grab and self-promotion trip (Thierry Breton, who's just resigned as Commisioner today, is said to seek higher office. Probably disappointed that Von Der Leyen was reappointed. New minister in France and more?), and Musk is the boogeyman. Disinformation is everywhere in the EU/Europe. Read or watch the mainstream media and news, but this is controlled. X is not controlled and Musk is highly critical of the 'correct' narrative so this is both a threat and opportunity.
- raverbashing 2y ago> Thierry Breton, who's just resigned as Commisioner today Lol. Apparently he's blaming VdL. Can't say he'll be missed
- mytailorisrich 2y agoOn the other hand, this is the sorry state of play, apparently: "...von der Leyen's attempt to form a gender-balanced College of Commissioners. So far countries including Slovenia and Romania have withdrawn male candidates under pressure from von der Leyen, replacing them with women." "Breton accused von der Leyen of offering France a more influential portfolio if Macron switched candidates, a tactic she has reportedly tried with smaller EU member countries." [1] But, again, he was gunning for the top job and didn't get it, and France finally has a new PM who is to form a new government, so perhaps he feels this is a right time for him to leave and, who knows, reappear in the new French government. Back to the point, I think Breton and the EU were also seeing Musk and X as good targets that served there ambitions. - raverbashing 2y agoTrue. "Sorry state of play" is Politics 101 So I won't put it past him wanting to leave but also playing the situation to his favour

X is not controlled and Musk is highly critical of the 'correct' narrative so this is both a threat and opportunity. How is EU deciding that X (due to its revenue) is exempt from the DMA rules - which are about competition/data interoperability/data portability/limiting abuse of uses data - a power play/power grab/self-promotion trip? Most privacy and rights organisations (EFF etc) mostly approve of the DMA/DSA aims. https://www.eff.org/pages/adoption-dsadma-notre-analyse https://www.eff.org/pages/adoption-dsadma-notre-analyse
- mytailorisrich 2y agoObviously the saga between the EU and X/Musk has been running for some time... And obviously the DMA is political, and specifically how it is used against this or that platform is political. The usual argument that there is nothing political or no further motive because "it's only the rules" is naive at best.
- rsynnott 2y ago> And obviously the DMA is political, and specifically how it is used against this or that platform is political. ... Are you suggesting that Twitter is being spared as a political act? Per the requirements of the act, which are made clear in the article, the DMA simply cannot apply to Twitter; it is too smol. (Possibly you're confusing it with the DSA, which absolutely does apply to Twitter? I'm not totally clear on what you're trying to say.)
