HP blocks printing with non-HP inks
From Joshua Weiner, replying to his friend Darin[0]:
I was printing worksheets for my classes and ran out of colored ink. The printer had plenty of black ink. HP internet blocked my printer saying I purchased colored ink that was not HP brand. So what?? Anyway, I had reinstalled HP ink for black ($40 approx) but had no money to buy colored ink so I left the empty HP cartridges in the printer. I only needed to print black and white worksheets.
HP blocked me from printing anyway, with a wireless message. I called customer support and told them I don’t need the colored ink. I need to get these worksheets to the students. They told me I violated the HP ink rule and had installed non-HP ink a few months ago. I told them well… yeah I did that purchase but HP printer rejected the cheaper brand and I threw them away. They said it is noted…
I told them who cares all the HP ink is now in place and I need to use the large black ink cartridge. They needed video proof. I let the customer support wench Marissa use my cell phone camera to prove I had empty colored HP and HP black installed. She said it was good. Then I was told I had to buy colored ink $58.72 and put the new ink in place if I wanted to use my printer again. Paid them the damn money and should have the ink in seven days.
She gave me a 15% discount but it is from HP website and the prices are inflated anyway.

- pestatije 2y agoweve been hearing about printer ink for years now...whoever gets stung by this nowadays has no excuse, when u buy your printer u know where u are getting into
- gjvc 2y agothe modern hp seems to be run by real shitbags
- casenmgreen 2y agoWe stopped using HP ages ago. Bought a new printer just to get away from them.
- hansoolo 2y agoSame here! I even planned on climbing a high building and throw that HP printer from the roof! So happy with my Brother machine now...
- jqpabc123 2y agoThe only reasonable and practical response to inherently hostile corporations to return their hostility in kind. Just say "no" to anything with their name on it --- until they repent, apologize and change their behavior. My personal list includes HP, Google, Meta and X. Turnabout is fair play, don't you think? The US auto industry alienated half their customer base with their inherently hostile tactics. I haven't bought an automobile from a US manufacturer in 40 years. And others now step up to insist on treading this same path.
- alecsm 2y agoI remember the first company I worked for. We had many different offices around the city and nearby cities. In every office we had several HP printers, same model. Everything worked fine until HP pushed an updated and on the same day, all the printers stopped working due the ink cartridges not being HP. We then bought Brother printers with laser instead of ink and as far as I know, they are still working right now after maybe 10 years. Lesson learned.
- smodo 2y agoMy ink supplier actually provides refunds on their own ink whenever HP pushes another OTA update. They just keep doing it, the industry is aware. And when my next toner runs out I’m buying Brother and never touching HP again.
- wruza 2y agoHP is a global meme at this point, why did they get an HP “printer” in the first place? It’s okay to ignore fine print, but one must live under a rock to buy anything from them today. Could get a proper printer for that $98.72.
