Strong focus on a social graph (this is the part that brought “social” into the phrase), follows, re-sharing, personalized feeds that make selections largely to increase engagement. Some of these I mentioned my first post. They’re major elements that characterize social media, and distinguish it from other things that are social, are media, or are both (but aren’t “social media”—the thing the term refers to, which is different and distinctive enough that it’s nice to have a label for it)
- stickfigure 2y agoThis sounds a lot like trying to define assault weapons. There are a few features you don't like (which many people do) so any website with too many of those features is Evil. Though I suspect it's more emotional. Is Whatsapp social media? What about email lists? I'm also curious to know what you think of HN's "social credit score".
- fragmede 2y agoI imagine their thought process is "Social media is what the stupid people use, and I'm not a stupid person. I use HN, so HN isn't social media", and then try and backsolve a definition from there. When in reality we're all humans.
