Ask HN: Is there currently a Linux compatible kernel being written in Rust?
Given all the brouhaha surrounding the stonewalling of efforts to support rust in the Linux kernel, are there any alternatives being written in rust?
- rajat 2y agoRedox. Probably worth doing regardless of brouhaha or not. Different design choices, etc!
- cies 2y agoDid you try a google search? Redox is mentioned. There are other projects but afaik they've stalled. The first few hits with google contain links to their project pages.
- John23832 2y agoThe reason why I ask in a place like HN is for a more curated response from people who I would assume care about the subject. No need for snark.
- cies 2y agoThat could have been your question: Can anyone share their experience with ... This question "Is there currently ..." comes off as lazy.
- John23832 2y agoI'm sorry you took so much umbrage with the way I phrased my own question, that instead of ignoring it because you don't have anything to actually contribute, you needed to take time out of your day to pen a comment describing the question as lazy. Again, all of this is in contrast to you just going about your day because you have nothing positive or constructive to contribute. Wreaks of miserable, frankly.
- cies 2y agoYou are asking others to take time our of their day to answer you. You seem to forget that. You call it "your own question" but it's the question we receive, you receive answers. Complaining about answers people give you for free is, well, there's a saying "beggars cant be choosers". You failing to see how I try to help you get more responses, instead you call me miserable. Auch.
- networked 2y agoI assume by "Linux-compatible" you mean "compatible with the Linux ABI" and therefore able to run Linux binaries. Several Rust kernel projects that implement the Linux ABI have shown up on HN. Out of them, only https://github.com/asterinas/asterinas https://github.com/asterinas/asterinas seems to still be going. Its initial commit was in May 2022, and the latest was today. As far as I know, Redox doesn't implement the Linux ABI; it aims for source compatibility.
- runjake 2y agoRedox OS. It’s not a Linux clone but it seeks a high level of Linux compatibility. It’s been progressing well for years. https://www.redox-os.org/ https://www.redox-os.org/
