The PS5 Pro is Playstation's fidelity folly
- anigbrowl 2y agoWhy are gamers like this? People dinged the console for performance issues when the lushest 4k graphics options were selected, so Sony responded with a model that delivers lush graphics and smooth gameplay at high frame rates. I've never even seen a PS5 and I know this from overhearing gamers talk about it. istm Sony's bigger problem is a lack of AAA games that make the console a must-have rather than a fun option, but since it's essentially a PC in a custom box idk how they square that circle. Juicing the hardware mid-cycle may not be the most exciting option but it's hardly unprecedented.
- talldayo 2y ago> Why are gamers like this? Well, look back at the PS3. Sony felt super self-conscious about how Microsoft and Nintendo beat them graphically with weaker hardware, so they went with a radically expensive iteration that ostracized huge portions of their playerbase. A big reason the Wii and Xbox 360 were so popular was that they were cheaper and more available, not that they were particularly powerful or unique. You're right that software is a bigger concern for Sony right now, but a more expensive mid-cycle refresh might do more harm than good. A $300 digital PS5 slim model would have sold like gangbusters if they announced it before the holidays, but a $700 premium model in this market is about as DOA as the PSVR 1 and PSVR 2 were.
