I was there from the ground floor and Gitlab.com failed miserably in SEO. There are ancient threads about it on their issue tracker, that go nowhere for years and years. It's almost as if they were trying to sabotage themselves. SEO was hugely important because when you searched for something Github projects actually came up in Google, gitlab.com did not. Even if there was an interesting project there, it wouldn't have been known. So I'm not surprised Github became synonymous with Git forge online.
