Sourceforge was horrible to use. GitHub was widely used but it only really reached proper dominance I think when it started offering free closed source repositories to people that weren't paying them, which was what, 2014/2015 or so? Until then it was pretty common in my experience for people to use BitBucket for Git for private stuff.
