Pakistan's China-style firewall is rattling its tech industry
- hunglee2 2y agoNot many entities can now secure digital sovereignty. US obviously has it, through dominance of the Internet. China has managed it, via GFW. Russia will get it through the consequence of being _evicted_ from the US internet. EU might manage it through inadvertently forcing the withdrawal of service of US companies who can't find the motivation to build endless consent waivers. Everyone else...already locked into the US internet
- FMecha 2y agoJapan and South Korea has their own "digital sovereignty" to a lesser extent too, given how dependent their users are on many local services run by (de facto) keiretsu/chaebols (YJ/LINE/Softbank/etc in Japan; Naver/Kakao/etc in South Korea) - though the trend is declining in Japan.
- hunglee2 2y agoyes quite right. Both require 'special casing' - I wonder whether it is language that is the critical factor, both the native level of English language fluency + the lack of foreigners not knowing Japanese / Korean.
