It’s impossible to protect housing as a retirement investment for the middle class while simultaneously making it affordable. Housing as an investment is a pyramid scheme that transfers money from young people to old people. Pensions used to be what fueled retirement, and we are never going back to pensions, so if we want affordable housing, we need to restructure our economy to replace it as an investment.
- Spartan-S63 2y agoI'm confused as to how housing is a retirement investment. I get not having a housing payment in retirement, but how do you gain on the appreciation? In my view, you never do. It's your heirs who do, which makes real estate a stupid investment.
- Gibbon1 2y agoA single family house is probably the worst investment, low rate of return and illiquid with high costs to sell. You can buy a house and won't break even till six years in. But it's the only way to invest rent money.
