California is controlled by Democrats and has one of the country’s worst housing crises, driven by a matryoshka doll of bad laws and blatant corruption, designed to protect the grossly inflated valuations of real estate speculators, so please, spare me.
My landlord’s children can inherit a tax advantage, based on a property valuation from the 1970s, for a fully paid-off building. By extension, they are then more or less guaranteed to collect 30+% of other people’s income because these insane market distortions have priced most everyone else out. It’s practically feudal.
- IG_Semmelweiss 2y agoIts complete gaslightning. "Trust us to put the fire out on housing crisis!" (Proceeds to hide the complete mayhem that is CA housing or any other major metro that is 100% dominated by democrats)
- Brian_K_White 2y agoCalifornia doesn't have a housing crisis, it has an everyone thinks they have a right to move to California, and specifically into existing neighborhoods, whether anyone already there wants to sell them a house or not problem. Those not-dense places are as dense as they want to be. Why does anyone else think they have the right to force them to become denser so that they can cram in? It's not like they are prevented from building in new empty places. Even IN California let alone just stay in Arkansas or wherever they already were before they decided some already occupied place in California owes them an appartment.
- bugglebeetle 2y agoFound the NIMBY. Too bad it’s not only your fantasy transplant hordes that are getting priced out of the market, but people that have been here for generations. > Those not-dense places are as dense as they want to be. By whose account? Last time I checked, owning property doesn’t get you extra votes, although real estate investors do spend a lot of money bribing politicians to make things that way. But all of California’s major cities are underbuilt relative to comparable global population centers though, so this is just a bullshit argument on its face.
- Brian_K_White 2y agoMy back yard is in NJ. So much for finding a nimby.
- bugglebeetle 2y agoCharacter flaws aren’t specific to people in any one place.
- Brian_K_White 2y agoYou didn't say garden variety dick, you said nimby. and it was a assumption. Turned out to be false on top but that actually hardly matters. Here's a few character flaws to consider: Making assumptions. Attacking the person instead of the argument. Saying "character flaws" in response to "does not agree with me".
- bugglebeetle 2y agoIt turned out to be entirely correct, as evident by your nonsensical (and cliche NIMBY) retort that the housing crisis is driven by “everyone think[ing] they have a right to move to California.” I’m not sure how you would also expect anyone to engage with this “argument,” as it’s not an argument of any substance but an unfalsifiable supposition about countless people’s motivations, that only exists with the confines of some just world fallacy. It’s also entirely tautological- the people who own homes in California deserve to own homes in California because they own homes in California while the people who don’t do not.
- Brian_K_White 2y agoNo part of california is my back yard, and I have no particular objection to any developments in my actual (figurative) back yard. There is no way to apply nimby to me. I haven't said anything that depends on being falsifiable, unless you can say that Californias "housing crisis" is the result of the children of preexisting Californian residents, and/or that California does not allow any building anywhere. But you can't say either of this things. If there are too many people in California, most of them are immigrants, and being unable to build housing in a particular place while being able to a few miles away is not a crisis, it's just something some people want, and I don't see how they have any special right to get what they want. You can argue those points, but accusing me of nimbyism is not such an argument. It's just namecalling.
- fragmede 2y agoEven if we stopped immigration in and out of California, it's not building enough housing for children of residents as they grow into adults and want housing of their own. It's a crisis, no matter how much you want to NIMBY your way into blaming (internal) immigrants.
