Judge Rejects yet Another Attempt by Texas to Police Online Speech
- matthewdgreen 2y agoIt’s fun that basic aspects of the 1st Amendment are now up for grab in partisan politics. Can’t see how this will go badly for us all.
- amitport 2y agofree speech is overrated
- trilbyglens 2y agoSays the person who has no life experience to compare the alternative to.
- amitport 2y agoYou'd be suprised. There is a lot gray between "speak against the gov and be executed" to "advocate for a world clean of Jews and be ignored" (until you gain enough support to take over)
- analognoise 2y agoIt’s weird to me that rather than defending the rights of others to say things we disagree with, people now seem to think somebody else can do the hard work of silencing people they disagree with, and they think this will never blow back on them or have any downsides. It’s like given freedom, people decided it was too much work.
- trilbyglens 2y agoIt's amazing to me (former Texan) how the state is just shamelessly pushing so hard in the opposite direction of Good in almost every single dimension. Want to know what side of things history will land on? Pretty much see how Texas is handling things and do the opposite. It's always been an authoritarian culture there, but now they don't even try to hide it anymore. If they weren't constrained by being part of the US, it would be like Saudi for christians.
- nojvek 2y agoTexas still continues to be Red. If the people hated it, it’d be blue.
- panarky 2y agoThe cool thing about authoritarians is that they don't even attempt to base decisions on a solid foundation of settled law, or even a consistent ideology. That's why we get bizarre contradictions like these "free speech" cases out of Texas. First they say that platforms aren't allowed to moderate the toxic sludge their users post, because that would violate the constitutional freedom of users to force platforms to amplify their toxic sludge. But only when it's toxic sludge that the authoritarians approve of. If it's toxic sludge the authoritarians don't like, then they say the platforms are not only allowed to moderate it, now they're required to remove it. What happened to the God-given constitutional right to post toxic sludge?
- PolygonSheep 2y agoThanks for leaving so we don't have to deal with you!
