Gfycat
- joegibbs 2y agoWhatever happened there? They used to be huge, did they get done in by Reddit adding video support?
- voxelated 2y agoAround the time Gfycat ranked within the top 57 websites in the U.S by traffic, the company had no revenue and huge infrastructure costs. The fundraising was based on impressive numbers but the service was mostly used embedded on Reddit in an iframe. Moderating content and transcoding to numerous file formats was also costly. Gfycat had support for numerous legacy media formats. Giphy was a much better funded competitor which had much more mainstream usage. Ultimately almost every service that offers media hosting for free runs into trouble eventually. Gfycat was acquired by Snap and left to rot. Source: I worked at Gfycat in 2016
