- jmpman 2y agoI just had a call with Southwest Airlines today, trying to change a flight. The agent was an absolute delight. She understood what I was trying to accomplish, and what my secondary goals were (to get a promotion companion pass for next year), and ultimately recommended me hanging up and canceling my ticket and rebooking through my travel agency. There’s no way an Ai would have come up with that same solution. During that brief interaction, she was Southwest Airlines to me. Why I’m telling this story is that there are thousands of MBA drooling at the idea of getting rid of the person who just delighted me in this interaction, and replacing them with a lifeless AI. That’s the lowest hanging fruit for OpenAI to achieve its revenue goals - replacing people that provide, if not the human face, but the human voice of a company, its values and its sense of humor. That’s my worry. These people, who thrive in providing excellent customer service, and going to be replaced by matrix multiplication.
- leosanchez 2y agoWas the women you talked to a native English speaker ? I can see a future where AI is better than non native English speakers.
- jmpman 2y agoYes. Likely out of their Dallas HQ. And I agree that I’d rather have AI than someone out of the Philippines or Costa Rica or India.
- ViktorRay 2y agoWorth noting that OpenAI’s customer support, especially for business customers, uses real human beings. Not LLM’s. So if the corporation providing you a chatbot customer service rep isn’t even using a chatbot for its own prized customers….well do you really want that chatbot? Worth thinking about…
- tailspin2019 2y agoLast time I contacted them I received a reply ostensibly from a human but which was so obviously LLM generated it was almost funny. It was about an A4 page of text and spent most of it being empathetic to “how frustrating” my issue must be and how they were really keen to help. But it was extremely patronising, barely addressed my problem, and it felt like a really long winded and super polite way of saying “fuck you” to a paying customer. At least that’s how I took it. I’m sure LLM’s can be used really effectively in customer service but not by just blindly copy/pasting whatever it spews out.
- fire_lake 2y agoCompanies optimize for cost and consistency over delight. LLMs can be benchmarked and fine tuned. I think you’re right, but this will happen regardless.
