Qualcomm has explored buying pieces of Intel chip design business

- Sakos 2y agoIt really feels like Intel is lost at sea and has no idea how to recover. It's not a great sign when your management has tried nothing, is out of ideas and is asking Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs for help.
- alephnerd 2y agoSpecifically, the PC chip design portion. This is a division that has synergy with Qualcomm's other divisions (eg. Mobile processor design) and good for Intel because the PC space has lower margins, more competition, and distracts from Intel's core value prop in servers as well as fabrication.
- osnium123 2y agoThe client business fills the fabs for Intel. If they sell this division off, it will kill the fabs unless if prospective buyers commit to running volume through the Intel Foundry fabs.
- ksec 2y agoIt actually wouldn't be bad if Qualcomm tries to acquire Intel as a whole.
- bcrl 2y agoBut... would it turn out to be another giant merger fiasco as the Boeing merger with McDonnell Douglas was? Qualcomm could end up rotting from the inside if Intel's management culture takes control, and Qualcomm still has quite a bit of value. AMD fared quite well in its purchases of ATI and Xilinx, yet Intel royally botched the purchase of Altera. At some point it will be clear that corporate culture is the problem, and there are no easy solutions for fixing that in what is effectively an aging monopoly.
