Telegram will start moderating private chats after CEO's arrest

- 0points 2y agoRussia is our biggest problem for sure. They are threatening world peace and have been escalating the situation for years now. Don't you read the news?
- Prbeek 2y agoHow are they threatening world peace ? I travel a lot and I'm yet to meet a South American, an Asian or an Arab who considers Russia a threat to their peace.
- mopsi 2y agoUkraine is a major global producer of grain. Russian attacks on Ukrainian Black Sea ports and grain storage facilities disrupted normal trade and contributed to food crises all over the world. Western air defense systems currently protect Ukrainian ports and NATO warships from Bulgaria and Romania sweep Ukrainian shipping lanes to keep them open and protect international commercial vessels carrying Ukrainian grain, but few people are even aware of the link between Russian attacks and rising food prices, because most people get their information from the social media, where cheap sensational anti-American trash like Area 51 and 9/11 conspiracy theories dominate over high quality information. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea_Grain_Initiative https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea_Grain_Initiative https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_food_crises_(2022%E2%80%93present) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_food_crises_(2022%E2%80%...
- dralley 2y agoBecause at the same time as they're invading Ukraine and conducting clandestine attacks across Europe, they're also cultivating a relationship with North Korea and Iran, and encouraging them to pick fights while the US and NATO are distracted.
- homebrewer 2y agoI think you ignored the spirit of Prbeek's question. I live in one of the countries that belong to the "global south", and have a very different perspective, along with most of my countrymen, because what that Kremlin asshat is doing is not unique to Russia in the slightest. I hope one day you (not personally you) learn to respect that and remember that the world is much bigger than a few Western countries. Let's leave it at that.
- immibis 2y agoRussia is the one doing it to the West right now, so it's their (a westerner's) biggest problem.
- tmottabr 2y agoAnd westerners country have done it to both Russia and pretty much to the entire world for decades.. They are only tasting a bit of their own medicine..
- llamaimperative 2y agoDone what exactly? Can you describe that medicine?
- tmottabr 2y agoharassing other countries, starting wars, etc.. Russia is doing it now to westerners countries the same way westerners countries have done to the entire world.. Lets not pretend the last two world wars and significant portion of local wars were not started by westerners countries after all..
- KoolKat23 2y agoThat's far from true, yes the layman on the street may hold that opinion due to a lack of insight or due to undue focus on short term selfish interest. But diplomatically, where geopolitics actually matter, this is not the case. They are indeed concerned. Specifically concerned for the erosion of rule of law (international law), which implicitly can lead to war. https://press.un.org/en/2022/ga12458.doc.htm https://press.un.org/en/2022/ga12458.doc.htm
- mensetmanusman 2y agoTheir TikTok is geofenced to ignore the war.
- immibis 2y agoSeveral very influential Republican YouTubers were just outed as being paid to interfere in the election so yes.
- uyzstvqs 2y agoFALSE: A media organization known as Tenet Media reached out to political commentators as a publisher for their shows. This organization was found to have received funding from Russian sources. The commentators were unaware of this and are considered victims of the scheme, as per the indictment. Your statement is malicious disinformation.
- llamaimperative 2y agoNo no, the commentators claim to have been unaware. And even if they were unaware, they were actually paid by Russia to advance Russian interest and they did just that, so GP is still accurate.
- decremental 2y ago[dead]
- mopsi 2y agoIt is very difficult to believe their ignorance if you watch things like the currently circulating video of Tim Pool pounding a table and screaming how Ukraine is the enemy of the United States[1]. I found it a comically forced and poor attempt at propaganda, like something from a SNL sketch or a Borat movie. - EVa5I7bHFq9mnYK 2y agoThe report button always existed. That's not what French police wants from him - they want to be able to listen to private (group) chats and to get IPs and phone numbers of participants.
- afiori 2y agoDid it also exist on non 1-1 chats and groups?
- miohtama 2y agoIt did
- llamaimperative 2y agoWhy is the first sentence this then: > Telegram has quietly removed language from its FAQ page that said private chats were protected from moderation requests Was the FAQ incorrect? Is the Verge lying about what the FAQ said?
- miohtama 2y agoVerge is lying what FAQ said and says today, because they did not check the source.
- llamaimperative 2y agoThis seems pretty different to me? From https://telegram.org/faq https://telegram.org/faq July 17 2024 from Wayback Machine > Q: There's illegal content on Telegram. How do I take it down? > All Telegram chats and group chats are private amongst their participants. We do not process any requests related to them. But sticker sets, channels, and bots on Telegram are publicly available. If you find sticker sets or bots on Telegram that you think are illegal, please ping us at abuse@telegram.org. You can also use the 'report' buttons right inside our apps, see this post on our official @ISISwatch channel for details. [Emphasis mine] Today > Q: There's illegal content on Telegram. How do I take it down? > All Telegram apps have 'Report' buttons that let you flag illegal content for our moderators — in just a few taps. On Telegram for Android, tap the message and select Report from the menu. On iOS, press and hold the message. On Telegram Desktop, Web or Telegram for macOS, right-click the message and select Report. Then choose an appropriate reason. You can also use our automated takedown email address abuse@telegram.org. If you're sending an email takedown request, please make sure to include links (like t.me/... or @...) to the content on Telegram which you think needs attention from our moderators. Users from the EU are welcome to study the User Guidance for the EU Digital Services Act for the relevant reporting options.

- chgs 2y agoVery few people can agree what limits speech has. Some countries limit in certain ways, others don’t. Hell a lot of people can’t even agree on what “speech” means.
- gherard5555 2y agoI believe peoples have a right to discuss whatever they want in perfect privacy. A messaging application advertising itself at "private" and "secure" shouldn't bow down at government requests. At least they should have dropped these slogans a long time ago... Anyway peoples aware of that already switched to a superior platform (signal, matrix...)

- afiori 2y agoThis seems more of a 2-party consent vs 1-party consent issue. Based on the wording it seems to refer to the ability of users to report content. If you tell me something and I report that to a third party is a different situation than if the third party listened to our conversation.
- gherard5555 2y agoI get what you are saying, if you report something you saw to the authorities (for example someone about to commit a grave crime) and show them voluntarily the conversation, no problems with that the platform isn't at fault here. But the technology shouldn't allow the platform to get access to the whole conversation, just what you want to show/report. And that would be by design.

- emptysongglass 2y agoIt's unclear what's meant by "private" chats here: I assume Telegram is not planning on breaking the encryption of E2EE Secret Chats and that the non-E2EE Cloud Chats will be subject to greater controls?
- omgtehlion 2y agoThey do not have E2EE on 99.9% of chats. 1. E2EE is not available on desktop clients at all 2. E2EE must be explicitly enabled for each chat on mobile
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- 0points 2y agoA group chat cannot be E2E encrypted, or new members would not be able to see previous messages. So, this should demonstrate to you that Telegram private group chats are not E2EE.
- rightbyte 2y ago> A group chat cannot be E2E encrypted, or new members would not be able to see previous messages. Why? Any member of the group can send the messages to the newcomer. Not that I trust closed and centralized services anyways. But it should be possible.
- tmottabr 2y agoNew messages yes, but old messages no.. The typical way group chat encryption is done is the client generate a key per message, it use that key to encrypt the content of that single message. Then it will encrypt the message key with personal key for each member of the group, and it can only do that for current members of the group. Once you receive a message the client will use your personal key to decrypt the copy of the message key encrypted with it, then use the message key to decrypt the message. The problem with this is that, first it does not escale, the larger the group gets the harder it is to encrypt the messages because you need to encrypt the message key with more and more personal keys, this make the work load bigger and the message size bigger as well. Telegram support very large groups that make encrypting groups not practical. Also Telegram allow you to see older messages sent before you join the group as those get stored in the servers, if you join the group later then for older messages the per message key will not have being encrypted with your personal key so you cannot decrypt it, thus cannot decrypt the message. You would need to either store the per message key unencrypted in the server and make encryption useless as the server would be able to decrypt it, have the client from some older member of the group re-encrypt the per message key for older messages and send to new members or the simpler approach that Telegram took to not encrypt it at all.
