A third possibility, she said, was that vision loss might cause dementia because people who use their eyes less have degeneration and less blood flow to the brain. Painful memory: My mother's mind was nerfed, from being able to live with & care for my father (in their own house), to sharing a room with him in a 24x7 care facility, by a circulatory problem - which also blinded her in one eye. There were plenty of symptoms before the real damage occurred, and America's oh-so-great medical establishment burned through >$100K (inflation corrected) in fancy diagnostic tests...but failed to find the actual problem, until after it was too late. (Her underlying problem was well-known for a century, and is both easy to diagnose and trivial to keep in remission...IF you're a competent diagnostician, who gives a crap about your patients. But, sadly, there are no bragging rights, high-tech, nor big profits to be found in its diagnosis, nor treatment - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/giant-cell-arteritis/symptoms-causes/syc-20372758 https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/giant-cell-ar... )
