New study suggests nose picking could increase risk for Alzheimer's and dementia (2022)
- highfrequency 2y ago"The olfactory nerve in the nose is directly exposed to air and offers a short pathway to the brain, one which bypasses the blood-brain barrier. It’s a route that viruses and bacteria have sniffed out as an easy one into the brain."
- andrewclunn 2y agoThey just could not resist the pun... and I'm here for it.
- shreddit 2y agoIs it at least not much bigger than a womp rat?
- causality0 2y agoThat headline is a wild extrapolation from the actual study. They showed that in mice a species of bacteria can travel from the olfactory nerve into the brain which results in the production of amyloid protein. The olfactory epithelium is 7cm inside your nose. You are the nose-picking champion of the world if you can get your booger-hook that deep.
- luizfzs 2y ago100%. This is a horrible and misleading headline. They should really be ashamed of having such a headline.
- laurent_du 2y agoOr, if their goal was to get people to click on their link, they should be proud because it's going to be very effective.
- skapadia 2y agoI'm screwed.

- limbero 2y agoSensationalized title from Griffith University's news site. The study itself may be a better link?[1] [1] https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-06749-9 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-06749-9

- brianbreslin 2y agoHow far away from a vaccine/treatment for alzheimers do we think we are? Or dementia? I'm using the term vaccine liberally here. We know its linked to build up of amyloid beta proteins, does anything clear this protein away that we know of?
- fsckboy 2y agoHow far away? we don't know. does anything clear this protein away? plenty of sleep daily is a very good candidate, 7+ hours

- jamal-kumar 2y agoWhy is this flagged? It tracks with other research stating that persistent diseases (In this case chlamydia) are a potential risk factor. It's already been determined that herpes is one of these [1] , then the research on gingivitis being a huge risk factor as well [2]. I could absolutely see other bad hygeine habits like not brushing your teeth on the same line of risk as picking your nose [1] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8234998/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8234998/ [2] https://www.nia.nih.gov/news/large-study-links-gum-disease-dementia https://www.nia.nih.gov/news/large-study-links-gum-disease-d...
