Place holders for ram refresh… AAAND we’re back!
Prowess. 2 tangential thoughts that you might be able to bring back into the fold.
A: that snowclone from Thucydides sounded familiar, but what I really recall was Brasidas’ un-spartan virtues. I cant find my notes, maybe you can XD. Did he out-Athenate the Athenians? Afairc those unspartan virtues didnt travel well in Sparta even after his death-by-victory.
B: Rao’s hackstability, transmuting sprezzatura into samsara, if not erloesung. Morlocks -> Hacker, Eloi -> the Machine (think temple of Moloch in Metropolis; Mittler ~ James Scott’s metis?

What about the trifecta in Russell’s taxonomy? I’d guess PG et al (Type IIIs) bet on it, but having not read Rao’s Gervais Principle, they had to empirically derive the managerial revolutionistas inserting themselves between the Type Is (where matter = customers as well as cash/the lower levels of the infra) and the Type II “system designers” aka “founders”. The new insight (relative to GP) seems to consist of previously repressed kinship bonds between the founder and the infra. (At this junction I tend to revisit my thoughts about p2p child rearing in the kibbutz)
Now.. back to why prowess is deprioritized in uh silo’d hacker “spaces”.. i’m guessing its hard to converge on a shared metric of prowess across hacker subdomains. Other signals, e.g. lieblingshunde can be more reliable. Post coarsegraining we identify Stanley, but in his day the Londoners, what did they think? Why did his brother support Warbeck??? Further riffing on microlocal banks managing the exchange rate (of talent) based on perhacker PPP (“proven prowess parity”) to be called for…
[1,5]Hmm de wiki for Biche says it was an austrian patrol. She was real family! Proof of fortune. The proof-by-lieblingshund would be legal tender on Sand Hill Rd. Not so much proof-by-sansoucci.
[petit nicolas] You do make me miss the locally-sourced, artisanal, post-talk snacks
[EDIT2-3: looking at the DL bookshelf, the accompanying soundtrack (if i riff from superficially collating memories of certain other bookshelves) would be
Sprawl II/Tracy Kidder (now with a stake in Jack Dorsey’s Block.io/Tidal)
“Simulation n its discontents” should be paid close attention, with Freud/Oedipus in the background?
[EDIT] easier for me to sympathize with Hacker > book Jeeves > tv Jeeves. The dot product.. might not be real..
Have definitely also run into the “seasonal farmboy-wranglers” in the Appalachian slopes, but uh i think since the crowd was demographically narrower/less touristy/the local culture more laidback not much wrangling took place.. or rather there was a lot more fiddling with the machines rather than people. - 082349872349872 2y agoMy bad: southern slavs, in (AEIOU, for smaller values of A) austrian service: https://books.google.de/books?id=6Ec6AAAAcAAJ&pg=PA190&lpg=PA190&dq=einen+Trupp+Panduren#v=onepage&q=einen%20Trupp%20Panduren&f=false https://books.google.de/books?id=6Ec6AAAAcAAJ&pg=PA190&lpg=P... (illustration on following page) https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandur_(Soldat) https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandur_(Soldat) (and also here "bei einer Rekognozierung zu weit vorgewagt" puts the blame squarely on Condé's hay-giver; time for me to adjust my former weights...) Simulation and Its Discontents has the most Post-Its, for sure, so I'd hintergrund A Pattern Language on the same metric, instead of its namesake. Brasidas: Thuc 4.84 "And presenting himself before the multitude (for he was not uneloquent, though a Lacedaemonian), he spake to this effect:..."? http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0247%3Abook%3D4%3Achapter%3D84 http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%... or https://archive.org/details/a609583001thucuoft/page/301/mode/1up https://archive.org/details/a609583001thucuoft/page/301/mode... more TK (oh, wait: metis/techne seems awfully close to a relabelling of techne/episteme to me; does Scott have any equivalent to phronesis or is Dr. Ian Malcolm's tagline the least squared-error current equivalent?)
- 082349872349872 2y agoProof-by-sanssouci was less for the hotbed of sophistry which is Sand Hill and more for the sort of philosopher who would claim we must wait until death (for vampires, Schützenberger would say a terminal loop suffices) to call someone fortunate, for (due to non-monotonicity of the quick) until then the best we can do is to label them lucky. You never count your money When you're sitting at the table There'll be time enough for counting When the dealings done Having been severely handicapped by never having seen either of The Offices, I finally schlepped through Gervais Principle[0]. Here are my maps to rather more canonical fiction: Animal Farm: {sociopaths:pigs+Benjamin, clueless:dogs+Boxer[1], losers:"the animals"} 1984: {sociopaths:inner party, clueless:outer party[2], losers:proles} (and of course in this model the Great American Fiction would be "in this country, we're all clueless") I don't know if the HN thread ever touched on it, but the major drawback of "Founder Mode"[3] seems to be that it relies upon internal development of sociopaths, for what external (or board-affiliated?) sociopath is going to want to be involved with an org in which their fief is constantly being meddled with by their liege[4,5]? [0] use of partial orders would make GP crisper, but probably less explainable to its target audience? note the thermodynamic argument that Rao makes: a sociopath isn't concerned so much with either the full observability or control matrices of the clueless+loser system as they are with simple draw/stand pat decisions. You've got to know when to hold them Know when to fold them Know when to walk away And know when to run [1] what about the sheep? they certainly buy wholeheartedly into the pigs' Reality Distortion Field, but other than as cheerleaders, they don't seem to be much use for maintaining the system: more a greek chorus? [2] in particular, Smith is so clueless that he's (or ought to be to any reader over the age of 14) an antihero. There's even a reading where the interview with O'Brien could be taken as a test of sociopath potential, in which Smith (confirming his adolescent A-level results) signals capital-c Clueless. [3] anyone ever say to what extent Glorious Leader Jobs' 100-person retreats created a Nomenklatura at AAPL? [4] this reading makes the charitable assumption that founders are sociopath; if they're clueless then the mentioned drawback would instead be an asset: promoting "founder mode" would be how a guru could keep other sociopaths from cutting in on their piece of the action. [5] I've heard that the brits created de novo a fair amount of South Asian aristocracy, because they assumed that various nabobs they bargained with had had hereditary posts, and the latter, whose lands were compensation for service, not even for life, but only at the pleasure of the raja, weren't about to educate them.
