The first time I read this was over GPRS on an HTC Typhoon smartphone running Windows Mobile during my 2-hour commute to my first job in tech after university, and anything seemed possible. Surprised to be sitting here years later feeling much the same.
- lxgr 2y agoSony PRS-505 e-reader for me, shortly after Doctorow's also Creative-Commons-licensed "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom". I felt exactly the same. Also, at least part of the novel was apparently written on a PDA according to Charlie :) > Manfred's on the road again, making people rich ... > I typed those words on a Psion 5. A perfectly-formed miniature computer with keyboard and screen, 8Mb of RAM, a 16Mb CF card, and a 22MHz ARM processor running an operating system called EPOC32, which was the missing link ancestor behind Symbian. It has a serial port and an infra-red interface by which it could talk to my mobile phone, a tri-band Motorola GSM device that had an infrared modem that supported the dizzy data rate of 9600 bits/second over the air.
