Ask HN: Companies that hire remotely, worldwide
No matter how much I search, I can't find a good way to locate companies that are willing to hire remotely (from anywhere in the world) through an EOR (Employer of Record, like Deel.com). I moved to Spain after growing up in the US, and the biggest hurdle I've faced is finding companies that actually hire remotely, not just as freelancers. Usually, "remote" means "within the country, but from home." I was hoping someone might know of a list or resource they could point me to. Thanks!
- gregjor 2y agoWhat’s wrong with freelancing? A pile of employment and tax issues go away for potential customers (employers) when you freelance. Less friction. I don’t think you ask the right question. Instead of “Which companies hire remotely?” ask “How do I get a company to hire me and not care where I live?” For the right person most companies will figure out some way to hire, they just have to want you enough to do the extra work. Most countries have labor and immigration laws that require exhausting local talent before hiring foreigners. That means you need skills and experience they can’t find locally. American companies tend to pay the most and the US has lots of companies that might hire. I find freelancing remotely for American companies the sweet spot. Best rates, no language or cultural disconnects.
- fdezmero 2y agoThanks, gregjor. There's nothing inherently wrong with freelancing, but it does create more hurdles when it comes to things like bank loans and other financial matters compared to a permanent job. Having steady, long-term employment can simplify these processes. I agree that for the right candidate, some (but not most) companies will go the extra mile to hire them, and that was my case in a previous role. However, that's also why I'm specifically asking if there are lists of companies that use EOR services like Deel. These services handle much of the paperwork, essentially acting as a proxy for the employer. Knowing which companies are already set up with an EOR shows they have a remote-first mindset, which helps narrow down the search and target those companies more effectively.
- gregjor 2y agoI haven't tried to get a big loan but I haven't had any problem buying a car, renting an apartment, or getting credit cards since I started freelancing. Worst case they ask to see a few years of tax returns. Deel shows off their customers on their web site, which gives me the impression they will happily tell you which companies hire through them. Maybe ask them for a list. I don't know about Deel. I have a couple of friends who work through Iglu in Thailand, same kind of thing. They do get a visa with work permit and health insurance but they give up 30% of their income. No thanks, I can do a lot better freelancing. I think you mentioned Spain, which offers remote worker visas now.
