[Dont know where the grand old man anigbrowl is on the SV centric political spectrum]
Before you get too annoyed, remember that these 2 (Greer & Farrell) are right of the SV centre. Their analyses would be about as accurate as left-of-SV-centre critiques like Barbrook’s.
I have read about 14% of the canon, and almost all of them honour the (certified sprezzatura-free) elbow grease. PG popularized “schlep” amongst the Sand Hill goyim, after all?
Here’s a post from someone in the centre that was reposted in the last 12hrs, i briefly went over it, and indeed there is a whole lot of coverage on the nuance of “schlep”. Feel free to apply the same analysis. :)

[EDIT: i agree somehow (with your hunch? As well as a pinch of old-fashioned hubris) that PG’s unhealthy obsession with Firenze and Wodehouse seems to cluster around sprezzatura]
- 082349872349872 2y agoNot annoyed, mostly interested that a word can shift so drastically over 5 or 7 centuries (and I had been thinking a few days ago that in areas where "hacker culture" is more guardian[0] than trader, it's because of the prowess thing). I'm surprisingly still at ~40% of canon, although aging out rapidly [in my day, The Soul of a New Machine (1981) would've been part]; however Titan had exactly the opposite effect from inspiring emulation: my takeaway from that one was that JDR (compare Fred "FedEx" Smith?) made one very poor bet ("oil will not be discovered anywhere outside Pennsylvania") that paid out handsomely[1], nevertheless you won't find me going down to the track to go all in on trifectas. Schlep vs sexy (gedile?) certainly models the remaining humans in agriculture: when it took many families[2] to work a farm the least human was above almost all animals[3], but now a farmer's main job is (farming) to connect and disconnect the tractor from various implements, and to intervene during all the myriad ways something can go wrong in the field, and (ranching) to wrangle the cattle in those (two-sigma) situations where their knowledge of how pasture and milking work doesn't suffice for whatever mess[4] they've gotten themselves into. Peeking into the back of a chain gas station/convenience store furthers this impression: they've got every available wall plastered with (a) instructions for how to deal with all the machines/inventory according to the normal schedule, and (b) what to do in the most frequent cases that something isn't working normally. Finally, all the special note-taking apps and even hardware devices which HN loves are IMNSHO yearning for the sexy: we'd had little enough experience with personal computers that we had thought they'd be bicycles for the mind, but people growing up now must think of a laptop the way we thought of work uniforms, and hence must project their inchoate desires onto a different device? EDIT: how large is the dot product between the Appleby/Hacker dynamic and the Jeeves/Wooster dynamic? EDIT2: looks like I dot-product higher with the Dynamicland bookshelf ( https://dynamicland.org https://dynamicland.org infra) —despite their maker tribal allegiance— than with Collison's, so maybe I shouldn't prematurely count myself as aging out? EDIT3: note that Brand, How Buildings Learn (1994) says much the same thing regarding samsara for traditional architecture that http://cva.stanford.edu/classes/cs99s/papers/myer-sutherland-design-of-display-processors.pdf http://cva.stanford.edu/classes/cs99s/papers/myer-sutherland... says for computer architecture. [0] I would maybe not have squicked so quickly on "Comrade Yarvin Thoughts" if he hadn't embraced the small time grifter vibe so thoroughly. Really, pinning your substack subscription? Why not go all the way to "like and subscribe", or "ask me how"? [1] for some reason, I do admire Frederick II, despite the fact that before winding up at Sanssouci (proof of fortune?) he once had to keep his dog quiet while hiding under a bridge as a russian[5] patrol went over it; probably because I judge that bridge incident as having been, not up from or at, but 3 or 4 sigma down from objectively reckoned mean outcomes? https://www.mediastorehouse.com.au/p/690/frederick-great-prussia-hiding-enemy-22648872.jpg https://www.mediastorehouse.com.au/p/690/frederick-great-pru... [2] in those days it was to the farm-owner's advantage to encourage the help to get knocked up young: as long as they were single they'd be living in the farmhouse and he needed to pay them in cash; once they paired off they'd be renting an outbuilding from him and he could cancel that out against working for produce. (the destitute were stuffed into an attic and also sustained via un- or less-marketable produce) [3] "beasts aren't christians" was once a local saying; I wonder if some of the yearning for the-good-old-days comes from people who would've been around the middle of the living beings on the farm heap, but in our industrialised age find themselves on the bottom of the homo sapiens in the suburbs heap? [4] mountain farmers work the ski resorts in winter; I often wonder how much difference they see between wrangling the occasional cow and wrangling the occasional tourist (who also generally knows how lifts work, but still runs into specific problems from time to time)? [5] this specific incident was very lucky; in general russia's exit on Elizaveta Petrovna's death was also luck.
- 082349872349872 2y agoSchlep/Sexy also maps nicely onto Morlock/Eloi. (is it ethical for Morlocks to build platforms attracting Eloi?)
- 082349872349872 2y agoCome to think of it, schlep/sexy is an important distinction to the plain anabaptists in the US: schlep (especially communal schlep) is good; sexy (especially individual sexy) is bad. (as I understand it, their notion of "Gelassenheit" runs close to an ideal of avoiding the melacha of borer 7/7)
- gradschoolfail 2y agoPlace-holder: River of child-shamans vs hemitheutic (Agnes Dei) koinonia (in the context of Ruth) vs goodfaith sprezzatura vs interactive proof (with a canonical role for the sheep in the antimatroidal frame [0-1])
- gradschoolfail 2y agoNot quite Non-fictional Ethics, maybe Real-Time Ethics? (Possible case study of a trio of Morlocks’ deplatforming proposal attracting Eloi?) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41470263 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41470263 PG has already gone all in on repl.it, 10x the sprezz is required for the equivalent NPO (more related dynamicland rants to arrive)
- gradschoolfail 2y agoPlace holders for ram refresh… AAAND we’re back! Prowess. 2 tangential thoughts that you might be able to bring back into the fold. A: that snowclone from Thucydides sounded familiar, but what I really recall was Brasidas’ un-spartan virtues. I cant find my notes, maybe you can XD. Did he out-Athenate the Athenians? Afairc those unspartan virtues didnt travel well in Sparta even after his death-by-victory. B: Rao’s hackstability, transmuting sprezzatura into samsara, if not erloesung. Morlocks -> Hacker, Eloi -> the Machine (think temple of Moloch in Metropolis; Mittler ~ James Scott’s metis? https://archive.ph/hrdIL https://archive.ph/hrdIL What about the trifecta in Russell’s taxonomy? I’d guess PG et al (Type IIIs) bet on it, but having not read Rao’s Gervais Principle, they had to empirically derive the managerial revolutionistas inserting themselves between the Type Is (where matter = customers as well as cash/the lower levels of the infra) and the Type II “system designers” aka “founders”. The new insight (relative to GP) seems to consist of previously repressed kinship bonds between the founder and the infra. (At this junction I tend to revisit my thoughts about p2p child rearing in the kibbutz) Now.. back to why prowess is deprioritized in uh silo’d hacker “spaces”.. i’m guessing its hard to converge on a shared metric of prowess across hacker subdomains. Other signals, e.g. lieblingshunde can be more reliable. Post coarsegraining we identify Stanley, but in his day the Londoners, what did they think? Why did his brother support Warbeck??? Further riffing on microlocal banks managing the exchange rate (of talent) based on perhacker PPP (“proven prowess parity”) to be called for… [1,5]Hmm de wiki for Biche says it was an austrian patrol. She was real family! Proof of fortune. The proof-by-lieblingshund would be legal tender on Sand Hill Rd. Not so much proof-by-sansoucci. [petit nicolas] You do make me miss the locally-sourced, artisanal, post-talk snacks [EDIT2-3: looking at the DL bookshelf, the accompanying soundtrack (if i riff from superficially collating memories of certain other bookshelves) would be Sprawl II/Tracy Kidder (now with a stake in Jack Dorsey’s Block.io/Tidal) “Simulation n its discontents” should be paid close attention, with Freud/Oedipus in the background? [EDIT] easier for me to sympathize with Hacker > book Jeeves > tv Jeeves. The dot product.. might not be real.. Have definitely also run into the “seasonal farmboy-wranglers” in the Appalachian slopes, but uh i think since the crowd was demographically narrower/less touristy/the local culture more laidback not much wrangling took place.. or rather there was a lot more fiddling with the machines rather than people.
