This article would be much more interesting if it compared the cost increase of cloud vs. the cost increase of on-prem.
It's not like on-prem costs have magically stayed the same while cloud costs increase.
- duxup 2y agoOr the added costs of on-prem that you're not dealing with in the cloud. Not to say it's a slam dunk either way, you gotta compare, but on-prem is not without its own unique requirements.
- luma 2y agoLike-for-like, those costs go down over time and have since we started building datacenters. Electric costs roughly track inflation, but the price of a TB of storage or 10GB switch port or a 24 core CPU goes down over time. That's why it's hard to align the price of cloud services, the underlying fundamentals are understood and they generally track downward, yet somehow AWS and Azure and GC etc all find ways to increase their pricing.
- ajsnigrutin 2y agoThere's still the middle ground, either virtual or real machines hosted somewhere else. Pay fixed monthly amount, get a machine somewhere, don't have to deal with heating, cooling, power, internet, anything, but still noone will charge you anything "per database lookup", per IO cycles, etc.
