I use the reward system with a slight twist: I'm not allowed to start a new project until I complete my current one. Since I have a huge backlog of ideas, my "reward" for finishing a project is that I get to work on the next most exciting idea. Yay! This forces me to keep the scopes small. I'm allowed to rescope my current project to something smaller/imperfect after I've started (for example if I discover that my initial vision is going to take too long), but I still have to finish it before I'm allowed to start the next one.
