The US Steel South Works site mentioned in this article is turning into the DARPA Quantum Proving Ground [1]. Folks who own their homes free and clear will do pretty well, even if they aren't going to be getting the high-paying jobs that are going to be created. Some friends of mine had parents that worked in the mills and grew up down there. It's not an area of Chicago that many people frequent, but I've been down there some. The lake is beautiful and peaceful, the built environment used to be nice and will again when the land price go up and encourage repairs and renovation. And the neighborhood does have existing train service and a nice bike path to downtown.
