Legal personhood dates back to (at least) Ancient Rome: * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_person https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_person Medieval guilds, city charters, universities were all forms of such. Liability would be implicitly included in such structures.
