I'm not sure it's so much of a boycott anymore most people that I know who complained about Bud light and stop drinking it cuz the big brouhaha didn't even bother to realize all the other brands that Anheuser-Busch has. Granted each one operates with somewhat autonomy for their marketing and so forth they're still under one big corporate umbrella who ultimately oversees all of it.
I think they had forgotten one of the oldest principles about having loyal customers. Never give your customer an excuse to try another brand. Overall beer drinking hasn't fallen but when you produce a beer that is slightly flavored alcoholic water and the reason people drink it is mainly around image when you change that image they'll try something else. People will find other slightly flavored alcoholic water to drink. They'll realize that it don't taste that much different and they weren't drinking it for the taste to begin with so this is what happens.
Considering overall sales of Anheuser-Busch owned beers have continued to rise and they continue to be the market leader worldwide it almost seems that perhaps this was a calculated strategy. Perhaps their goal was to stop having such lopsided sales of Bud light compared to their many other brands and to even that out a bit. Because a boycott of an individual beer line when they have countless others many of which are very similar could have been a planned correction strategy, or it could have been ignorance and dumb luck. Because we've never seen companies do anything like that, ever.

Bud Light has returned to its spot as the top-selling U.S. beer by volume, even if revenue has lagged. Discounts to maintain volume, at the cost of profits?
