There are restaurants that do this. I don't patron them. I eat alone when I'm traveling and want to catch up on HN after a hard day at a customer site or if I had a hard day in general and want some me time (as cited by the article). Last thing I want to do is have the usual conversation with a stranger that I will never see again. Not every restaurant experience needs to be a social one.
