Scientists Discovered a Way to Make Your Batteries Survive Way Longer
- doublerabbit 2y agoThis one trick that Apple hates. > it may soon be the case that smartphones offer good battery performance for more than a couple of years, and camera batteries deliver consistent performance for a very long time. Great. If the industry would actually take that onboard and not use capped out batteries as a means to push their latest yet same device.
- LorenPechtel 2y agoWhy does everyone think Apple was being evil about this?? Fundamentally, it was a matter of being conservative (throttle the CPU) or liberal (faster, but risking an instant and perhaps destructive shutdown.) The power supply in your computer makes the same choice--kills the system with a modicum of control rather than allow the voltage to drop to the point that the electronics might mess up. If you're old enough not to have to get off my lawn you might remember in the old days how there were procedures to ensure no destruction on powerdown. They're a thing of the distant past, though, because now the power supply can tell the hardware not to trust the power and the hardware responds by covering it's ears and not trusting any further commands.

- nwellinghoff 2y agoWow this is wild and so counterintuitive. Basically totally free too. I hope its actually true!
- thimkerbell 2y ago"Researchers at SLAC-Stanford Battery Center report in a study published today in Joule that giving batteries their first charge “at unusually high currents increased their average lifespan by 50% while decreasing the initial charging time from 10 hours to just 20 minutes.”"
