I think there is a stoic quote which says that "If every person had access to same reasoning process and facts as me, they will reach the same conclusion as mine".
As we know, people don't have access to same set of facts and even if they do, they don't have time to reason over them. I believe if each person could stop the world, spend time on going over all the knowledge accumulated by humanity and then make a decision, democracy is possible in such a scenario. But that is not true, we are made to play many timed chess matches where we have only few microseconds to make a decision before some other issue (another chess match) calls for our decision.
- karmakaze 2y agoThis assumes that people use facts and reasoning to vote. The truth is closer to voting for "who you like better" which is anything but.
- breuleux 2y agoWe could, in theory, pick a random sample of people and give them the time and money to actually think about the issues. Statistically, their interests should match those of the general population, but they will be better tooled to actually attend to them. I do think it would ultimately be much better to pick representatives at random than elect them.
- rexpop 2y ago> give them the time and money Sounds like a republic, which most of us live under. The issue is that "the time and money" is exactly what "the general population" doesn't have (per your example), and so their interests diverge.
