When we had our daughter, my aunt was just concluding a 40 year nursing career. She was eloquent about breastfeeding being superior to formula, based on her experiences with sick infants. Real milk makes babies heal faster, according to her.
Producing milk isn't necessarily easy: not all mothers can do it; and it is something between irritating and intensely unpleasant for some women. Add in hormonal birth control methods that may react unpredictably with the natural maternal bodily upsets and there's many good reasons a modern mother may choose not to try breastfeeding.
Also, look at dairy operations. our friends that make goat milk soaps have a large herd of goats, and almost none of that milk goes to the babies. Baby goats get hand fed mother's milk the first couple days and then go on commercial formula "milk replacement," which is a sweeter, tastier formula than we feed to human infants.
I'll bet people have run the studies on animals, that can't ethically be done on humans; and "formula" seems to have won hands down.
