New invention harvests ambient WiFi and Bluetooth signals to power small devices
- tzs 2y agoThis sounds neat, but the article, and the abstract of the Nature Electronics paper (the full paper is paywalled so I did not look at it) don't make it clear that harvesting ambient WiFi to provide useful amounts is not what is new. See for example the work in using ambient radio for both power and communications that was done at the University of Washington 10+ years ago [1][2][3]. It was recently licensed to a company that plans to commercialize it [4]. It sounds like what is new here is how ambient RF is being harvested, which seems to be letting them get quite a bit more efficiency than other methods.
