Forensic toxicology backdates the use of coca plant in Europe to the early 1600s
- keepamovin 2y agoFrom 1.2: Nowadays, this drug is involved in 1/5 of overdose deaths across the world and had a retail value in 2020 of 1.5 billion dollars in the second largest illegal drug market. Yet, there is very little hard evidence of when people started consuming this plant in Europe. Potential factual correction: 1.5 billion seems to be underselling it considerably.

- keepamovin 2y agoAlso! Tho i assumed that meant it was laced with fentanyl etc, or coke was in their system but overdose was something else.
- solumunus 2y agoIt says 1.5 billion in the second largest market, if that market is the UK then it seems realistic. I could be misinterpreting the sentence.
- idunnoman1222 2y agoYeah, so the reason they’re testing for cocaine is because that’s a test they have available. I doubt it was actually positive, they just needed something to write their paper of analyzing some preserved brain around
