SV school district pauses contract with 'energy healer' after parental concern
- koolba 2y agoFrom the article: > Mountain View Whisman School District made the decision at a meeting of the Board of Trustees on Thursday after the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the 4,500-student K-8 district was paying $189,000 in exchange for 160 meditation sessions to energy healer Alycia Diggs-Chavis. This is a public school district so spending $189,000 of the public's tax dollars was agreed to by the school superintendent (i.e. "principal") and the school board.
- teqsun 2y agoSo, roughly $1200 per session? I don't know how long a typical energy healing session takes, but even if each session was 8 hours long it would still work out to an hourly rate of about $150 an hour.
- HarryHirsch 2y agoCheck out the bio on her website, the lady has a degree from Harvard. She knows how to work her clientele, and besides that sort of extravagance is a Veblen good, it wouldn't move off the shelf unless the price is sufficiently high.
- HarryHirsch 2y agoCan someone please explain how that stuff got past Internal Controls? In the US there is separation between Church and State. If the district had handed over 200 kUSD to a megachurch pastor there would be well-deserved outrage and an investigation. But not here, seemingly, because it's New Age religion. The Linkedin biography of the lady is instructive - she worked in government contracting services for decades and has a consultancy. That's how you worm yourself in and then milk the system. Low-level corruption in the US doesn't exist, you don't slip the post office clerk a ten-dollar bill to expedite your passport. But if you are after a government contract, Ms Diggs-Chavis demonstrates how that is done: become part of the inner circle and start taking from the pot. Why does the super still have a job?
