Every cruise line contract I have agreed to excludes the cruise line from any liability regarding lost luggage. In most ports between when you drop off the luggage and it is put on the ship and from when the luggage leaves the ship until you pick it up the luggage is in the control of a 3rd party and not the cruise line. This is why all cruise ships will allow you to bring your luggage on and off yourself. They also all highly recommend you do so with anything valuable. If you want to be reimbursed for lost luggage that is what travel insurance is for and all cruise lines highly recommend you purchase travel insurance.
The author didn’t carry off a bag which he knew contained valuable and maybe irreplaceable items himself and it sounds like he didn’t insure the items. The situation sucks but it sounds like the author also needs to recognize his own culpability in the situation.
