Where's Gail's?
- zeristor 2y agoWhich links to: ‘Does it have a Gail’s?’ How a bakery became middle-class England’s most powerful political bellwether https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/aug/22/gails-bakery-middle-class-england-political-upmarket-chain-libdems https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/aug/22... We had a low aspiration baker before Gail set up. My main dislike is a cafe in a narrow shop from means nearly all the seating are is in a dank windowless back part of the shop. This episode has pointed out the Private Inequity drowning out shops, I guess the brand awareness goes someway to garnering business.
- fuzzfactor 2y ago>The Lib Dems surged to their best-ever general election result in July by ruthlessly targeting Conservative constituencies. Never heard of Gail's in the US but that's ruthless enough to make me wonder "where's Ruth" about now ;)
- zeristor 2y ago“Many of the residents’ comments under the petition against Gail’s in Walthamstow cite Johnson’s politics as a reason to boycott the chain. When the campaigning leftwing barrister Jolyon Maugham spotted the connection between Johnson and Gail’s, he called on X for a boycott of the chain, even offering sourdough starter to followers struggling to wean themselves off their fix of fancy bread.” Drumming up support on X, to boycott someone brand incongruous political views; satisfyingly ironic.
